Lewes BPW is drawing attention to a critical issue affecting the reliability of energy services in our community: plantings and other items obstructing access to electrical transformers. This problem has been increasingly reported, impacting our ability to maintain and service essential infrastructure.
Transformers play a vital role in distributing electrical power, and unrestricted access is crucial for routine maintenance and emergency repairs. Unfortunately, an uptick in the planting of trees and shrubs around these crucial pieces of equipment is creating significant challenges for our operations. These obstructions can lead to delays in addressing power outages and other maintenance needs, potentially disrupting service for our customers.
Current Situation:
- Access Issues: Many transformers are now surrounded by dense vegetation, making it difficult for maintenance teams to perform necessary tasks. This can lead to extended downtime during power outages and increased safety risks.
- Community Impact: While landscaping contributes positively to the aesthetic and environmental quality of neighborhoods, the placement of certain plants too close to transformers can inadvertently hinder their functionality.
Actions Being Taken:
- Enhanced Monitoring: We are ramping up inspections to identify and address areas where plantings and other obstructions are impeding transformer access.
- Public Awareness Campaign: Lewes BPW is launching an educational campaign to inform residents and businesses about the impact of planting near transformers. This includes community outreach, informational materials, and online resources.
- Customer Support: We encourage the public to report any instances where transformer access may be obstructed. Our customer service team is available to assist with any concerns and to provide guidance on how to handle such issues.
Our primary goal is to ensure that we provide uninterrupted, reliable energy to our community. Addressing the issue of plantings obstructing transformers is crucial for maintaining service quality and safety. We are committed to resolve these challenges and appreciate the community’s cooperation in this effort.
What You Can do:
- Do Not Obstruct: Obstructions include fences, shrubs, trees, storage sheds, etc. Plant roots can ultimately shift the transformer’s position over time. Plants must be completely removed, not just trimmed.
- Adhere to the Lewes BPW Electric Tariff: Lewes BPW specifies that there must be 10 feet clearance in the front of the transformer and 3 on all other sides. Proper clearance allows for access, as well as the ability for heat to disperse which prevents equipment from overheating and malfunctioning.
- Stay Safe Around Transformers: Avoid contact with pad-mounted transformers. Do not allow children to play on or near transformers. Do not open or tamper with equipment.
- Call Miss Utility before you dig: Submit a locate request either online through ITIC Lite or contact the call center before clearing planted obstructions. This is a completely free service that will help to identify any underground lines in the area.
